You need to run the join code from the replica database instance that you are trying to join.
If the database is not in a recovering state presumably it is recovered? If so you need to ensure a secondary replica database is restored with no recovery in order to be able to join it. You could attempt taking a full and log backup from the primary replica db, restore to the secondary replica db with norecovery for each and then you should be able to join into AG group.
Please be very careful that you do not overwrite a live production database.
